MEMS-based Transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDSs) for skin cancer treatment

Cancer therapy is a field where the interest of researchers is rapidly increasing. MEMS and NEMS based transdermal drug treatment techniques are used for cancer treatment. Chemotherapy, immunotherapy is two of the main treatments used for cancer, and the drugs used in these treatments can be delivered to patients in an effective manner through micro needle-based transdermal systems. Drug substances that are used in transdermal drug delivery should have proper characteristics and there are several methods that are used to enhance the effectiveness of drug delivery systems. Chemical and biological enhancers, Micro-nano carriers, and physical enhancement devices are some of the common methods. Among that physical approaches get more attention nowadays and it includes techniques such as iontophoresis, sonophoresis, and microneedles(MNs).

These Transdermal drug delivery systems are getting more attention in the field of cancer treatment. different cargoes for cancer treatment including chemotherapy and immunotherapy are being loaded through TDDSs. I am focusing on the delivery of cisplatin drug for cancer patients through a combination of iontophoresis and microneedle techniques. MNs create a microchannel path for the drug macromolecules to pass through the skin. The combination of MNs and iontophoresis facilitates the delivery of macromolecules and other micro/nanomedicine.
